The Health Research Institute of the Balearic Islands (IdISBa) was born from the association and collaboration among the different centers and facilities that carry out biosanitary and biomedical research activities in the Balearic Islands.
The Institute was established on December 23, 2013, under the name Palma Health Research Institute (IdISPa). In 2017, its statutes and legal name were amended, and it became the Health Research Institute of the Balearic Islands Foundation. IdISBa is composed of the Regional Ministry of Health, Son Espases University Hospital, Primary Care Management of Mallorca, the University Institute for Health Sciences Research (IUNICS), Son Llàtzer University Hospital, and the Blood and Tissue Bank Foundation of the Balearic Islands. All these entities contribute the human capital that has enabled an increase in the critical research mass and fostered collaborations for the development of research projects among health services and professionals.
In January 2019, IdISBa was accredited as a health research institute by the Carlos III Health Institute, in accordance with Royal Decree 279/2016 of June 24, on the accreditation of biomedical or health research institutes.
IdISBa has identified seven scientific areas of interest, encompassing 56 research groups and around 800 researchers from its constituent entities:
- Cross-cutting Area of Health Science and Technology
- Public Health, Epidemiology, Clinical Practice, and Health Services
- Infectious Diseases, Antibiotic Resistance, and Immune Response
- Cardiovascular, Metabolic, Renal Diseases, and Nutrition
- Respiratory Diseases
- Neurosciences
- Oncology and Hematology
IdISBa has a total of 6.327,26 m² dedicated to research activities and management (laboratories, offices, meeting rooms, etc.). The main infrastructure, covering 3.040,78 m², is located at the reference hospital of the Balearic Islands, Son Espases University Hospital, distributed as follows: 1.304,90 m² on floor -1 of the main building, 1.580,88 m² in building S, and 155 m² on floor +2. In addition to research laboratories, building S houses the Institute's management headquarters and facilities for the Animal Experimentation Area and Experimental Operating Rooms.
Furthermore, the Institute's constituent entities provide the following spaces:

- Primary Care Management: 544.21 m²
- Blood and Tissue Bank Foundation of the Balearic Islands (FBSTIB): 1,284.70 m²
- University Institute for Health Sciences Research (IUNICS), University of the Balearic Islands (UIB): 1,177.65 m²
