Presentation and functions
The IdISBa Creation Agreement and the Foundation's Statutes establish that IdISBa is the entity responsible for acting as the Institute's Technology Transfer Office (OTRI).
For this purpose, in January 2014 the IdISBa Innovation and Research Results Transfer Unit (UITRI) was created, with the following functions:
- Management and implementation of the innovation and technology transfer plan.
- Coordination and management of all activities involved in the innovation cycle, especially the promotion of an innovation culture among researchers and institutions linked to IdISBa.
- Development of a framework for innovation management.
- Technological assessment of identified opportunities, detection of inventions, protection management, and promotion of commercialization and transfer to the market.
- Valorisation of the technological portfolio.
- Economic valuation of the Institute's intangible assets.
- Management of Industrial and Intellectual Property.
- Filing and processing of patents and other types of industrial and intellectual property registrations.
- Promotion of agreements and alliances with external stakeholders and partners, both at the business and institutional level.
- Technological development: identification of industrial partners for the development of Proofs of Concept or other collaborating entities.
- Management and support in the process of creating spin-offs or other technology-based companies derived from research results generated at the Institute.
- Business development and support to researchers in the management and negotiation of agreements and contracts related to research and innovation, including: Collaboration Agreements and MoUs, Scientific Collaborations, Service Provision Agreements, Sponsorship Contracts, IP Transfer Agreements and Consortium Agreements.
To carry out health and biomedical innovation management with the highest standards of quality and excellence, the UITRI follows the recommendations set out in the "Technical Guide for the Evaluation of Accreditation of Biomedical or Health Research Institutes (12 April 2019), Royal Decree 279/2016 of 24 June, Instituto de Salud Carlos III". This guide defines the milestones and guidelines that Innovation Units must meet, with the primary goal of transferring the research activity generated at the Institute to the National Health System and to society through the valorisation of research results and technology transfer activities. This positions the UITRI as a strong axis connecting researchers, patients, society, companies, knowledge generators and the productive sector.
The accreditation of IdISBa as an IIS in January 2019, together with the work of the Innovation Unit since the creation of the Institute, has significantly strengthened IdISBa's innovation and transfer capabilities in recent years. The consolidation and future growth of innovation and translational activities depends on the implementation of the IdISBa Innovation Plan, which defines the actions to be developed in the coming years, organised into four strategic objectives:
- Promote an innovation culture and collaboration with the business sector and society.
- Develop the skills required for the professionalisation of innovation management and ensure adequate resources.
- Establish an appropriate internal structure in terms of organisation, processes, and management tools.
- Strengthen and amplify IdISBa's public image in the field of innovation and the transfer of results to society and the productive sector.
IdISBa has therefore become the key institution within the Autonomous Community of the Balearic Islands with the capacity to effectively transfer innovation and results to the productive sector in the biomedical and healthcare environment.
This highlights the essential role that IdISBa must play in the region's industrial development, shifting from an economy predominantly based on tourism (almost 40% of the Balearic GDP) toward an advanced scenario in which health serves as a driving force for social and economic development.
