Description | Clinical Research and Clinical Trials (UBICEC)
The Balearic Unit for Clinical Research and Clinical Trials (UBICEC) is one of IdISBa's research support platforms. Its main function is to provide assistance to researchers in the development of both independent clinical research projects or non-commercial sponsor studies, as well as commercial sponsor clinical trials. The unit offers scientific and administrative advice, supporting regulatory and clinical management aspects, monitoring, and pharmacovigilance for independent clinical trials.
UBICEC-IdISBa's service portfolio provides researchers with tasks related to the design, planning, and implementation of clinical studies, as well as their coordination and development, including nursing tasks and biological sample management. It also performs data management and safety monitoring activities.
Since 2021, UBICEC-IdISBa has been integrated into the SCReN Clinical Research and Clinical Trials Units Platform (Spanish Clinical Research Network) of the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII).
SCReN is a cooperative functional network that brings together clinical research units (UICs) from 34 centers across 14 autonomous communities. Its general objective is to facilitate high-quality, excellent clinical research by providing appropriate support to scientifically relevant proposals, ensuring their proper development, dissemination, and final translation into the Health System.
UBICEC incorporates a new Phase I and II Clinical Trials Unit
- In February 2025, the new Phase I and II Clinical Trials Unit of UBICEC was inaugurated at Son Espases University Hospital. This pioneering infrastructure in the Balearic Islands covers 155 m² and is equipped with an inpatient area, day hospital, nursing zones, sample management areas, and coordination spaces.
- Its creation enables the execution of highly complex trials and facilitates access to innovative therapies for the Balearic population. The expansion complements the 260 m² already dedicated to Phases III and IV, reinforcing UBICEC's role as a benchmark in clinical research. In the past five years, these facilities have managed over 5,000 patient visits and 16,000 medical tests.
- The project was funded with €1.2 million from the Carlos III Health Institute, with additional support from the Sustainable Tourism Tax Fund and the Directorate General for Health Research. This investment will also drive decentralization strategies to facilitate patient participation from anywhere in the archipelago.
